Introduction

We started experimenting with AI-generated cutout people for architectural entourage and it turned out to be a genuinely interesting journey, with plenty of lessons learned along the way – and we wanted to share it.
The result: Quite some learnings, a nice free download pack for you and six new entourage collections! Let’s get into it!

AI-Generation: An Interesting and Insightful Journey

Getting from “let’s just try this” to a photorealistic library of AI-generated cutout people for architectural entourage wasn’t exactly a straight line. Our first test renders were… rough. Two reasons:

• We tested different AI image generators, which led to different quality levels
• We tested different prompts, which of course impacted the results too

The good news: the days of AI creating hands with 11 fingers are over 😉 But you still saw plenty along the way – poses that all looked the same and not quite natural, distorted faces (especially in less common poses, like people looking over their shoulder), or proportions that were slightly off. We saw the potential, but it wasn’t something we’d have put our name on yet.

Here’s one quite obvious example that also shows how significantly AI image generation models have improved lately:

And once you understand how AI image generation actually works, this makes sense: AI is trained on photos found across the internet – countless high-gloss ads and styled poses among them. So if you simply ask for a “walking man,” you’ll most likely get the one AI predicts with the highest probability: the “average” walking man. The real challenge, then, is getting more diversity and variation over time.

So we kept iterating: refined prompts, more test runs, created prompt templates and automation pipeline, invested quite some money into tokens for the AI tools… a lot of trial and error – and the quality curve climbed steadily.

In short:

• First attempts: proof of concept, but with repetitive poses, distorted details, and little diversity
• Dozens of iterations and prompt refinements (and costly tokens ;-)) later: more natural, varied poses with correct proportions
• End result: quality that drops straight into a real rendering, no hours of retouching needed

But there is another side to it too: AI can make mistakes! Body poses that are physiologically questionable, bikes with interesting constructions etc. Most of these get caught and binned before they ever reach a collection, but we kept a few of the funnier ones around just for you – maybe you`ll only notice it on second glance 😉

We figured you’d enjoy seeing the outtakes, not just the polished final product — and honestly, it’s a good reminder that even the best AI workflow still needs a human doing quality control before anything ships.

Benefits of AI-generated Arch VIZ Cutout People

If you’ve worked with entourage libraries for a while, you know the usual headaches: cutouts sourced from photos of real people who never allowed their images to be used which leads to legal risks for you. Or, if a model release has been obtained for the people in a collection, the cutouts in that collection usually always show the same persons over and over again.

AI-generated entourage fixes these at the root. There’s no real person in the image, so there’s nothing to license and nothing to worry about down the line. Every image in a collection comes from the same controlled workflow, so the visual style stays consistent throughout. With real photos, it’s also often a matter of luck whether the person’s current pose looks good or comes across as a bit awkward. Plus, you get all the variety you need – enough diversity, and the right fit for your specific project.

Learnings on Generating Scale Figures for Architecture with AI

Let me wrap it up:

• Test different AI image generators– Midjourney, ChatGPT Images, Nano Banana, and others – to find the best fit for you. Start with whichever one you already have access to.
• You can prompt every single image by hand, or use an API to generate more images with ease – that comes with a bit of technical overhead, and you then pay per image.
• Do not underestimate the effort for the whole process – it is fun, but it takes time!
• Huge advantage of AI-generated images: no personality rights concerns, and more control over look and poses. On the other hand, you have to explicitly instruct the AI on all the details you want to see.
• Check and optimize all results manually – the AI still creates some weird results here and there.
